Where's
my
Marmite!
Alun Jones (alun@eden.com) writes:

Alright, where's the Marmite info? I can find Bovril in this country,
but decent Marmite is very difficult to track down - somehow, the
supermarkets here have found a way to make the stuff go off.

Michael Stewart Copp replies:

Hello to the frustrated Marmite person,
I seem to remember seeing Marmite occasionally in some
of the specialty shops around this area. But with this area being
southeastern New Brunswick, that may not be much help to you. I
suspect it may be our somewhat closer proximity to the Kingdom
that allows us access to slightly more obscene mixtures than the
rest of North America (Perhaps you could try a Marks & Spencers?).
...and Alun responds:

You have Marks and Spencers in Canada? Maybe it's the French influence -
St Michael / St Michel, who can tell the difference?
The only regular high-street shop from England that I can see mention of
around here (in Austin, Texas) is the occasional high-priced bottle of Boots
shower gel. They've priced it (and are marketing it) as if it were some
kind of designer label. It always gives me a good snicker when I see it in
Dillards or some such department store.
It's quite heart-wrenching sometimes to find that the only place you can buy
Sherbet Fountains, Dip-Dabs, Marmite and Bovril is the "Exotic / Ethnic
Foods" section. Ah well, I shouldn't complain too much - after all, I can
afford to live here, and the parents don't visit quite so often.
Michael laments:
It's always a saddening thing for me when I come across you poor, displaced
Brits, cut off from your homeland and pining for your unique liquids. Having been born
and bred in the colonies, I receive only pleasure when, for the first time, I stumble over the bizarre English
collection of ancient fluids. What can be done to help you people? Perhaps mail order Marmite
over the Internet... hmmm...
